Multi-national fast-food chains seem to have given burgers a bit of a bad name in recent years. Concern about highly processed, high-fat convenience food has made people look for other options. But it doesn't have to be this way and, as a new restaurant in Cockfosters proves going out for a burger can be a gourmet experience.
The Burger Room and Grill, in Cockfosters Road, is about as far from a fast-food joint as you can get. Warm colours, lots of dark wood and scarlet leather chairs give this restaurant a touch of modern elegance that would not look out of place in the West End.
Everyone who walked through the door at the opening-night party commented on the interior and, eavesdropping on the table next door, I definitely heard the words funky' and cool' mentioned several times.
As you would expect from the name, the menu places a heavy emphasis on burgers. But this restaurant take the healthy eating concept very seriously, ensuring that all its burgers are made from 100 per cent beef or free-range chicken so that customers know that they are eating great quality ingredients.
All the burgers are available with or without the bun and for those who are more than a bit peckish, there is the Big Burger, a double portion which is apparently quite a challenge for even the healthiest appetite.
As well as a range of gourmet burgers, the Burger Room and Grill offers ribs, steaks and some great side orders. Their chips are delicious and I can also heartily recommend their potato wedges which are perfectly seasoned, crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle.
Children are welcome and there is a special menu to keep the little ones happy. The restaurant can also cater for functions, and it would make a perfect venue for a celebration.
So if you want to restore your faith in burgers and remind yourself just how delicious a really well made burger can be, visit The Burger Bar and Grill and you'll never want to go near a fast-food chain again.
