The tragic death of a Polish student trying to cross the four-lane A1 Archway Road in Highgate July 3 reminds us all just how dangerous this killer stretch of road is.
Some residents have called for a pelican crossing at the scene of the accident, and we wish their campaign well. But given that there are already two pelican crossings within 100 yards outside Jackson's Lane and the Woodman it seems unlikely that Transport for London TfL will agree to yet another crossing.
When I met the then head of TfL, Derek Turner, on site to discuss the possibility of widening the narrow Archway Road pavement, I flagged up the problem of pedestrians playing Russian roulette' and urged TfL to extend the barrier rails the full length of the road, to oblige pedestrians to use the two existing crossings.
That idea was rejected then, and again when I re-submitted it after pavement widening. In the light of this latest tragedy, I will submit it again, this time through a Conservative GLA Member to give it extra oomph.
