We are all aware that regular exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and although many of us start the year with good intentions, by summer, most of us have let our regular sessions slip.
This month, the Fitness Industry Association (FIA) launch their 14th annual CommitToGetFit campaign, which aims to help people lead healthier, more active lives by joining their gym. The European-wide campaign, sponsored by BUPA and backed by the NHS, encourages people to take up specially discounted trial memberships at gyms across the country.
All the participating gyms are FIA-approved and they can provide information on how to improve your health and fitness levels as well as how to stay active and fit.
If you're new to exercise, it's a good idea to check with your GP before you start so that any existing health issues can be taken into account before you begin. But all the participating gyms will ensure that you can exercise in a safe and supportive environment to help prevent injury and make sure that you are exercising at an appropriate level.
Increasing your activity levels protects against heart disease as well as some types of cancer. weight-bearing exercise such as walking or jogging, can also reduce the likelihood of osteoporosis (brittle bones) and help people enjoy an active old age.
Exercise can also help us to feel happier and more relaxed. This is because when you exercise, you release 'feel-good' chemicals called endorphins, so the more active you are, the better and less stressed you will feel.
The best thing about the Commit to Get Fit campaign is that it is open to everyone of all ages and abilities. Don't worry if you've never been to a gym before, as the staff at all the participating gyms will make sure you are made to feel welcome and well looked after. They will be able to talk through what you want to achieve and be on hand to offer the help and support you need to achieve them, so you won't be on your own.
So if you want to get yourself moving, stop putting it off and visit the local gym as there really is no better time to kick-start your healthy lifestyle.
