Gym memberships, equipment and exercise classes can all make the business of getting pretty fit are pretty expensive, but there are ways of working out your body without being too hard on your wallet.
Going for regular runs can be a really effective way to lose weight and get fit with the added benefit of being virtually free, so once you have a good pair of trainers you only have to invest your time and effort to get some great results.
Running is one of the easiest ways to kick start your fitness routine and even a slow jog gives your heart and lungs a great workout, getting oxygen and blood pumping around your system.
If you're new to running, it can be a bit of a shock to the system so if you're in any doubt as to whether it is for you, it is best to check with your GP before you start. As with any exercise, a good warm-up is vital to get muscles moving and prevent injuries, then you can start with a brisk walk that will get you nicely warmed up. When you feel ready to run, begin with a gentle pace that gets you breathing hard but still allows you to have a conversation. If you find you are getting really out of breath, slow down to a walk until you feel better and then slowly speed up again.
Don't be discouraged if you're unable to get very far on your first session. It takes time to build up fitness, and you should find that if you run regularly you will make quite rapid progress. Once you've got into a running routine try setting yourself small goals to keep your motivation up. This doesn't have to mean you have to enter next year's London marathon, but give yourself something to aim for such as running for 30 minutes without stopping, or taking part in a 5km run for charity. This will help you to keep going even when you don't feel like it.
It is very important to make sure that you eat properly before your run, even if you are running to lose weight. Avoid heavy meals just before your run as they will make you feel sluggish and may cause stomach cramps. Instead try something small like a banana to give you just the right amount of energy. If you are trying to lose some weight, the good news is that running will raise your metabolic rate and you will be able to burn food more efficiently for some time after you have exercised, so a run before dinner can help stop your evening meal going straight to your hips.
