The summer would not be the summer in Mill Hill without live music. And revellers have not been let down this year, thanks to organisers of the Mill Hill Music Festival.
Up-and-coming superstars, trips down memory lane and long-time festival friends are all on the bill for the five-day Mill Hill Midsummer Jazz event, which kicks off on Wednesday, June 16.
"It's a nice programme with something for everyone there are four free events and three ticketed events," said Jane Ellison, one of the organisers. "The ticketed events cover a real broad range in the jazz world, from what you might call soulful jazz to newcomers Gwyneth Herbert and Will Rutter, to the classic big-band sounds from the Glenn Miller era."
Recruiting Gwyn and Will, as they are known in the business, is a massive coup for the festival. The duo are the newest stars of the jazz world, with their debut album First Songs (which features the highly-acclaimed Jamie Cullum) earning rave reviews. Gwyn's voice has been compared to Diana Krall.
Tickets for their performance on June 17 at the intimate Holcombe House in The Ridgeway, Mill Hill, cost £16.
Other highlights include Campbell Burnap and his jazz band, who are making their fifth appearance at various music festivals in Mill Hill on June 18 at Belmont School in The Ridgeway. Tickets are £12.
To mark the centenary of Glenn Miller and Count Baisie's births, the 18-piece Hertswing Big Band will play big-band favourites on June 19 at Copthall School in Pursley Road. Tickets are £10.
People are encouraged to book tickets in advance. For credit card enquiries call 020 8958 4834, or tickets can be purchased from Nomad Travel, 87 The Broadway, Mill Hill. Visit the web site www.millhillmusicfest.co.uk for a full list of events, or to download booking forms.
