A PRIMARY school set up in an Edgware synagogue could be forced to shut because it does not have planning permission.

Barnet Council planning chiefs have been advised to reject a retrospective application to give permission for use of the site in Mowbray Road as a school and Kindergarten.

Currently 77 children are being taught at the school, which is made up of two semi-detached houses, from Monday to Friday. It is next door to the Rosh Pinah Primary School, although not affiliated with it.

Seven neighbours of the site have objected to the plans, saying it will cause extra traffic and noise disruption in the small residential close by the children playing in the playground.

The report which will be put before the Hendon Area Planning committee tomorrow night says the educational needs covered by the school do not outweigh the loss of housing in the building it now occupies.

Ten people have written to the council supporting the application for the permission for change of use of the building.

The decision will be made at a meeting at Hendon Town Hall in The Burroughs from 7pm tomorrow.
