Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs hit the stage at The Radlett Centre on Saturday afternoon in front of children and parents brandishing glow-in-the-dark sticks.
These set the tone for the vibrant production packed with plenty of “oh no you don’ts” and traditional pantomime fare.
Snow White, played by Julie Matheson, longs for the love of Prince Rupert as her birthday party approaches, but her step-mum Queen Esmerelda has other ideas.
The show provided a twist on the classic tale but the evil Queen Esmerelda, played by Lucy Williamson, and handsome Prince Rupert (Michael Anderson), gave the young audience plenty to boo and cheer about. And audience participation was the name of the game throughout the production.
Rob Copeland as Muddles, the entertainer of the show, asked the kids to make sure his bike wheel, the only part left after a recent theft, wasn’t stolen – with hilariously loud results.
The fairytale land was vividly depicted with an impressive set featuring varied backdrops. There was something there for older children too, as the show featured modern pop songs, some of which had their words altered to fit the show.
The usual Christmas panto C-list celeb didn’t feature in this outing and, without wanting to sound like a Scrooge, the song and dance routines could have been a little more impressive, even for a local panto.
Then again, this will pass unnoticed for the majority of the target audience and parents will find plenty for their youngsters to enjoy.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs runs until Sunday, January 3. Tickets: 01923 859291 Chris Hewitt
