CELEBRITIES have pledged their support to a good deed day which is set to be held next month.
Peep Show actor and comedian David Mitchell is one of a number of stars to have agreed to take part in Mitzvah Day on November 15.
Television presenter Angus Deayton is also on board, along with Mock the Week producer Dan Patterson.
Despite being the Jewish national good deed day, organisers are promoting multi-faith involvement and are said to be delighted at attracting support from across and beyond the Jewish community.
The Barnet borough is home to almost 60 per cent of the UK's Jewish population, and leader of the council, Councillor Mike Freer, has also signed up to the event.
He said: “Mitzvah Day reminds us that life is about what we can give back not just what we get and if we can have some fun giving - even better.”
The day coincides with the start of the UK’s first ever National Interfaith Week, and organisers are encouraging other faith communities to take part.
The interfaith Tony Blair Faith Foundation has also lent its support by urging all communities to get involved. Around the country, Jewish organisations are in talks with Anglican, Catholic, Muslim, Hindu and even Zoroastrian groups about ways to work together on Mitzvah Day Mitzvah Day founder and director, Laura Marks said: “Where practical, we are urging our partners to work with others so that all the faith communities can come together with a common goal.”
The Times Series competition to find good deeds in the borough is now running. To find out more about the day, visit www.times-series.co.uk/news/mitzvah or email project suggestions for our reporters to carry out to Francine Wolfisz at fwolfisz@london.newsquest.co.uk.
