THE MP for Chipping Barnet has pledged to cut the number of fixed speed cameras in the country, if the Conservatives win the next general elections.
Theresa Villiers, the shadow transport minister, told the Tory Party Conference in Manchester yesterday the party would not fund any more speed cameras if they win the next election.
She said: “A Conservative Government will focus on tackling the congestion that is costing the economy billions, and the resulting hassle that has made travelling in the UK so grim.
“We will empower road users with the information they need to understand and influence the decisions which affect their daily commute."
However, the AA says most people approve of speed cameras as a way of monitoring traffic speeds.
Other ideas put forward by Ms Villiers yesterday included a crackdown on clampers, allowing councils more freedom to pilot traffic schemes and freeing up data for traffic light phasing.
