THE hunt is on for good deeds that need doing ahead of this year’s Mitzvah Day.
Suggestions for jobs, tasks or activities that will benefit the community are being welcomed as people across the country are encouraged to support good causes in their area.
To coincide with the start of the build up to the volunteer day, held on November 15, our newspaper is setting a competition to find the most worthy and needy cause in your borough.
And this year, our news team will themselves attend the winning entry to carry out the good deed.
Founder of Mitzvah Day, Laura Marks, said: “The competition through the newspaper is to send in ideas for projects that need doing.
"They have to be doable in a day, affordable and make a tangible difference. Some people come up with a project that is a lot of fun, but in fact nobody benefits.”
Businesses, schools and religious groups are paired with the tasks that need doing.
In the past, projects have involved singing to groups of elderly residents in care homes, cleaning a cemetery and painting a youth centre.
Rachel Sharp, group editor, said: “We are delighted to be involved with Mitzvah Day. In the true spirit of the occasion, we are not going to just write about it, but we are going to give our time and actually do a mitzvah ourselves.
“Local newspapers are a part of their community, and should support events such as these. I am looking forward to seeing the suggestions for a mitzvah.”
