A GROUP of city workers swapped spin for spades to help create a green space for some Finchley school children.

The 40 staff from Clerkenwell-based PR firm Clarion Communications spent a day working on clearing a reading area at Chalgrove Primary School, in Chalgrove Gardens.

The clear-up was part of this year's Give and Gain day which involved national companies helping community projects across the UK.

Dozens of sacks loads of weeds and shrubbery were cleared from an area of undergrowth at the rear of the school and replaced with a matting and wood chip surface for the children. Additional plants and log seating was also put in to create the space.

It was the second time the company had visited the school as put of the London Business Communities initiative, having spent a similar day last year clearing the school's pond.

Headteacher Pauline Moss said: “It was wonderful to see so many people working to create the reading area for the children.

“It was one of the hottest days of the year so far, so we were really grateful for all their help.”

Gary Freemantle, Chief Executive of Clarion, who represents Nestlé, Unilever and Vue cinemas, said: “Having created a new school reading area it’s nice to think we might be helping to encourage the next generation of PR professionals.”
