THE Archbishop of Cape Town will pay a special visit to a Whetstone church this weekend.

The Most Reverend Thabo Makgoba will preach at the parish church of St John the Apostle, in High Road, on Saturday and Sunday, to celebrate the 125th anniversary of a South African religious order.

The Sisters of the Community of the Resurrection of Our Lord, which is based in Grahamstown, South Africa, was established in 1884 and marked the anniversary in April.

It also has a connection to the Whetstone, as it used to have a London base in Oakleigh Park South.

The visit has been arranged by church warden Brian Wakeham.

“I've met him a few times over in South Africa and I just asked him to come,” he said. “He's coming over just for this so it's a special visit.

“Last year we got Desmond Tutu, who was in the country at the time. I don't think we'll be able to beat these two.”

A Saturday service will take place at 11.30am, by invitation only, and all are welcome to the Sunday service at 10.30am.
