A VIBRANT mix of dancers and performers came together last week to showcase their talents in West Hendon.

Hundreds of people from the borough's diverse cultural background displayed a mix of traditional and contemporary shows at the Celebration Of Movement For Mind And Body, which was held at the Barnet Multicultural Centre, in Algernon Road.

The afternoon was hosted by the Say Go Over 55 project, and featured exercises accessible to elderly residents, or people with poor mobility.

Line dancers, belly dancers and yoga experts showed the audience of men, women and children the enjoyment that comes with group performances, and Sangita Pandya, from the Barnet Asian old people's association, said it was important to remind people they are only as old as they feel.

She said: “We wanted to encourage people and show them what sorts of different classes are available around the borough.

“All the cultures came together to enjoy learning and participating in relaxation exercises for the mind and the body.

“It is essential they know they can keep active. Just because they are old doesn't mean life ends.

“There is so much they can do and we don't always give them credit.”

Testament to that was a group of belly dancers who, despite being in their eighties, showed many of the young people watching the fun that could be had from getting up and performing.

The yoga demonstrations also gave practical advice on how to exercise and the Let's Dance programme showed that people of all ages could come together to enjoy group activities.

Ms Pandya said: “These can be very sociable activities as people do get together in groups.

“Coming along to classes takes away the risk of isolation they might feel and overall it is beneficial to their health.”

The event was supported by Age Concern Barnet, groups from the multicultural centre and the Susi Earnshaw Theatre School.

Deborah Cura, from Age Concern Barnet, said: “The exercises and performances the over fifties do here and at groups across the borough gives them confidence in their daily lives.

“Events like this give a positive view on what is out there in the community for this age group and highlights the good work people are doing.”
