Your article painted a depressing picture of the wrangling between the council and the owners over the future of our cherished stall market.
The owners say they have spent £8,000 resurfacing the old site.
I am perplexed why they have spent this money on an inadequate surface if they do not intend to complete it and return the market temporarily to the old site.
This would save whatever rent they are paying to the council for the site on Stapylton Road car park, and it seems they could earn money using the site as a car park themselves on four days of the week.
It cannot be difficult to erect the gazebos on the old site instead of Stapylton Road for however long it takes for the property and banking sectors to recover, and the development to go ahead.
If Mr and Mrs Walsh really do think the market is “intrinsic to the very heart of Barnet” why don’t they take this obvious option and end all the damaging uncertainty?
As stated in the article, the council has offered to advance the cost of completing the resurfacing of the site, so surely that cannot be the problem?
