THE number of people using libraries in Barnet has jumped by almost 8,500 each week over the last year.
Figures released by Barnet Council today show there was a 17 per cent increase in the number between May 2008 and May this year.
The increase has coincided with the authority's investment of £1.24 million to improve and develop several libraries in the borough.
The improvements include self-service terminals, wi-fi internet access and DVDs.
The figures are based on a survey of one week in May both this year and last year. In 2008 there were 49,273 visits, climbing to 57,802 this year.
Councillor Robert Rams, cabinet member for investment in learning, said: ”This is a great return on our investment and proves that residents really appreciate the advantages of having an attractive and up-to-date library service.”
