Well after years of propping up the League, our bottom sides have suddenly blossomed and are forging up their division. In contrast the rest of the Club had something of a nightmare on Saturday.

The 1sts visited bottom side Merton but couldn’t get vital points for their fading hopes of promotion. 12 games: Won 4; drawn 4; lost 4; goals 24 – 24 averaging exactly Saturday’s score. Spooky, but sounds like mid-table form.

The 2nds were unlucky to go down by the odd goal at Potters Bar against the second placed side. They rued missed chances but 32 goals against this season suggests a problem at the other end. Good to hear that Andy Paine was back playing after too long an absence. Hopefully we’ll see him again soon.

The 3rds were also up against Old Owens who were just below them in the League. They scored early and defended stoutly for much of the match. Anthony Carroll appeared to have snatched back a point when a carefully placed shot bounced tantalisingly against a post and away just before the final whistle.

Missed chances were also to blame for the 4ths failing to get to the Club’s first SAL Cup final. They did well to get that far though.

The 5ths had the luck against them in their game against the top of the table side and it was much closer than the score would suggest.

Something of a disaster for the 6th’s who were also playing the top of the table side. Enforced changes meant that they fielded a small side against one of the tallest in the division. Broomfield also had a long throw specialist, and set pieces caused mayhem in our area and were responsible for most of the early goals. The 6ths need to brush themselves down and fight their way out of the relegation zone.

Stung by being overtaken by the 8ths last week, the 7ths put in a stirring performance on the top pitch, coming back from 1-2 down with two magnificent goals from Bondy and Rahim. It could be the latter’s last game as sadly he is moving abroad for a while, but at least he leaves on a high note. Rahim has played the game in exactly the right sprit; with passion but without ever getting in trouble on the pitch. He was a good Clubman, always offering to help. Many others could follow his example. There are quite a few who felt he had the talent to play higher but you never heard the hint of a moan about selection from the man himself. He will be very welcome back, and we hope he will return to these shores soon.

Not to be outdone, the 8th’s continued their good form and good spirit by making it an unprecedented 4 wins on the trot. They have now moved up to a giddy mid-table position despite having the side hugely reshuffled by drop-outs each week. The famously named newcomer George Martin has knocked in 7 goals in the last 2 weeks and he doesn’t even know who the Beatles were!
