Would you believe it. EBOG - an island in the flood. All the pitches in the neighbourhood were waterlogged, more than 20 Clubs postponed all games including several even outside the notorious London clay.
Two years ago we would have been first to call games off, but at Alan Drive on Saturday it wasn’t even a close decision. One advantage was that the heavy rain stopped Friday lunchtime giving time for our new drains to weave their magic. Unfortunately the rain on Sunday left no such time so all games were lost.
Success underground was matched by success above it with a clean sweep of convincing wins. The 2nds didn’t quite manage the flowing football of the previous week but never really looked in trouble, and only a good HSBC goalkeeper stopped a much higher score. They are now in a creditable 5th place in Division 1 in which they’ve struggled in the last couple of years. They only need 2 more wins out of the remaining 9 games to reach the total that made them safe last year.
After the disappointment of last week the 4ths turned in a much better performance against a side from the Division above, although they are currently bottom. They have now reached the Semi-final which is a fine performance for a side in Div2. They are certain to now meet a higher placed side from the top division which will be a real test.
5th’s captain Dan Caskie showed the way by saving a penalty for the second week running, and this time saved the follow up shot as well! This 8 goal bonanza was important win because CEV were fellow strugglers and the 5ths are now 3 points clear of them. Darren Barker celebrated his first game back since his last fight with a hat-trick.
With the week’s weather forecast predicting a deluge on Friday we could be on for a spot of déjà vu next weekend. Let’s hope not.
