We all have a favourite song. Everyone's wedding party features the couple's first dance (except mine - we don't agree on music). Last week we were around at a friend's 50th and the some of the selection people mentioned were "I'm not in love" by 10CC, "Golden years" by Bowie and "Islands in the stream" by Kenny Rodgers and Dolly Parton. So go on have a guess what mine is?
Well I change my mind all the time. Having the attention span of a Gnat, I like different things at different times. Yeah I know, what a cop out. The family are under strict instructions that when I am cremated, they must play "Stuck in a pagoda, with Tricia Toyota" by The Dickies as the coffin goes through the doors. Other than that there are about 15 tracks which it could be. Now if you'd asked me at about 1.45 on Saturday morning I'd have said "The Day the World Turned Dayglo" by X Ray Specs.
I'd just been down to the Roundhouse with my old mate, Boz Boorer, to watch them. Now as Boz is an international star, having played guitar and been the musical director for Morrissey for the last 15 years, gigs are always punctuated with various people coming up for a chat with Boz.
Amongst those who we ran into was Chris from Madness, who was keen to brush up on his Punk rock. Earlier in the day we'd had Lee Thompson in the studio working on a side project with Jenny Belstar who are doing a London gig together on the 17th, so we had a good helping of Madness.
I love X Ray Specs. They are a band that could only have been successful in the Punk explosion of 1976-7. What would Simon Cowell have made of Poly Styrene walking on and saying "Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard, but I say O BONDAGE UP YOURS" on the X Factor. Given that the sax player was a Simon Cowell lookalike, we thought that was quite amusing.
As I mentioned earlier, "The Day The World Turned Dayglo" is a big favourite of mine. Having thoroughly enjoyed the gig, as we made our way back to Boz's place for a few apres gig beers, that would have been my choice.
Anyway as the beer's went down, Boz asked if I'd like to hear his new solo album - "Miss Pearl". Being a big fan as well as a good mate, I jumped at the chance. Now those of you who know Boz's work from the days of the Polecats, will know he's a rockabilly nut. No suprise as a 6 great rockabilly tracks blasted out of the CD player. All good stuff thoroughly enjoyable.
Then track 7. Now I know Boz is a musical genius, but I was unprepared for track 7. For track 7, he'd decided to cover "Rockaway Beach" by The Ramone's in a 50's rockabilly style. Let me tell you, it is awesome. I don't usually like Ramones covers as I think the originals are brilliant, but this is special. By 1.50 I had a new favourite song !!! We spent the next 3 hours discussing the similarities between Crazy Cavan and The Ramones. I strongly urged Boz to insist that he make "Rockaway Beach" the single. I think it could be a total monster hit !!!!
Anyway if you like the Ramones or you like Rock and Roll, check out "Miss Pearl". By the way I must email Lynne (Mrs Boorer) and apologise for insisting he played it 10 times in a row. It must be a bit wearing at 3.30 in the morning. Then again, I guess if you marry a musical genius you get used to it.
