Now that there is no denying that I am in the family way, myself and my pregnancy have become the chosen topic of conversation. And not just among friends with whom I kind of expect my impending motherhood to be discussed, but also with every Tom, Dick and Harry who even momentarily crosses my path.
It seems wherever I go people take one look at my face, an extended look at my protruding belly and start launching in to a barrage of questions about all things baby-related.
“When’s it due?”
“Do you know if it’s a boy or a girl?”
“How are you coping in this heat?”
And my favourite. “Aren’t you quite big for someone who’s not due until November?”
Bearing in mind I am only talking about comments from complete strangers, I do find this, well, a little strange.
I am not offended by it but I am slightly taken aback that having a baby bulge provides a green light to be asked questions some of my friends don’t feel the need to ask.
I watched a film a few weeks back (can’t remember the title) where two people saw a pregnant woman on a bus and started feeling her belly, even putting their ear to it incase they could hear something. (Word of advice, you can’t.) Anyway I am waiting for the day that happens. But I’m not sure I’ll react in such a nice way.
