The bereaved parents of a cyclist who died after a crash are leading calls for safety measures in the road where he was fatally injured.

Harry Webb was on his way to swim at London Fields lido on the evening of September 10 last year when a car and his bike collided in Kenworthy Road.

He died two days later. A police investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Parents Pat and Mike Webb have now reiterated their calls for Transport for London (TfL) to improve safety in the road where the crash took place.

The couple, who live in Wales, visited Kenworthy Road last weekend ahead of a court hearing where a woman appeared to face charges relating to the crash.

Mrs Webb told the Hackney Gazette that more than a year after Harry's death they observed the 20mph limit in the road seemingly “breached constantly”.

She has now urged TfL to introduce traffic calming measures and enforce existing rules, as well as backing proposals by Hackney Cycling Campaign (HCC) to introduce more crossings for cyclists and pedestrians.

The cycling campaign has called for changes to be made in Kenworthy Road for years and wrote to TfL last year asking for a crossing that would allow cyclists to travel safely between Mabley Street and Hassett Road.

It is on this stretch of the road that the crash involving Harry Webb took place.

As it stands, there are no measures in place to protect cyclists there, despite white bike markings on the road.

Transport bosses are yet to reveal any specific changes they plan on making to the road, other than a potential new pedestrian crossing by Ickburgh School.

Other measures suggested by the cycle group include improving the safety of the zebra crossing at the junction of Kenworthy Road and Homerton High Street.

The campaign added that it has also asked TfL and Hackney Council to work on improving the junction with Wick Road, which they described as “complex, but very hostile to pedestrians and cyclists”.

A TfL spokesperson said: “Our deepest condolences remain with the family and friends of Harry Webb who tragically lost his life last year whilst cycling in Hackney.

“We continue to thoroughly explore all options for new changes on Kenworthy Road, including a new pedestrian crossing by Ickburgh School, to ensure that any planned changes to roads here would work to reduce road danger to people in the borough.

“Any changes are subject to further discussion with Hackney Council and the local community.”
