Regulars at a bingo hall in Wood Green have played their last game amid plans to repurpose the site for housing.

Mecca Bingo has confirmed that it shut its venue in Lordship Lane on June 23, just four days after a consultation on the proposed closure came to an end.

Amid rumours that the bingo hall would soon close, one employee, who did not wish to be named, last month said they felt sorry for the venue’s regulars.

They explained: “We don’t have hundreds of people here, but in the morning, you have about 20 or 30 sitting there, they’re regulars. Where are they going to go?”

The employee added that they also worried about young staff members, who would now be left without a job.

The closure comes just months after developer Tri7 and student accommodation provider Fusion Group applied to Haringey Council to demolish the existing building.

Four buildings of between three and nine storeys would be built on the site, providing new homes and hundreds of student rooms.

A Mecca Bingo spokesperson said: “We are very proud to have been part of the Wood Green community for the last 28 years and hope our customers will join us online and in our remaining clubs around the country.”
