A man convicted of murdering a 23-year-old in a 'brutal attack' outside a shop has been jailed.

Sherome Williams, 21, of Woodlands Road in Enfield was convicted of Russell Jordan Jones's 2018 murder on June 14 this year, following a trial at the Old Bailey.

Williams sentenced at the same court last Friday (June 30) to life imprisonment with a minimum of 25 years for Russell's murder on March 17, 2018.

Russell was chatting to friends on South Street in Enfield when he was attacked by a group of men wearing dark clothing and face masks, who wrongly suspected him to be a rival gang member.

Detective Sergeant Joanne Donoghue, from the Met's Specialist Crime north Homicide Team said: "The wickedness and ferocity of the attack, which was captured on CCTV, has shocked even the most seasoned of homicide detectives.

"On a freezing cold night in March 2018, Williams and others armed themselves with a sawn off shotgun and knives before setting out in search of opposing gang members."

Russell nor his group were not part of any gang, police said, but Williams' group launched a ferocious attack.

Russell and was shot and fell into the road, before being set upon by the group who stabbed him several times.

One of his friends also suffered stab injuries.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, Russell was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Two others have already been convicted for the murder and given 29-year sentences in January 2019.

Detectives launched an immediate investigation, analysing hours of CCTV footage which was corroborated with mobile phone use by the suspects.

Det. Ser. Donoghue added: "The group they chose were not in a gang, they were simply a group of young men chatting outside a shop."
