There is a strong possibility Barnet Market could close completely. At present there is a mere vestige, with just a few stalls in a car park.
The market was established in 1199, given a Royal Charter by King John. Although it has changed in location and character, it has been, for the past 800 years, a useful amenity to residents of High Barnet and other towns for miles around. It has provided, at a reasonable price, many things which would otherwise be unobtainable.
Up to about ten years ago the market belonged to Bill Young, who sold it to a developer when he retired, with an assurance that there would always be a market on the site. Elaborate drawings were displayed, showing how the market would be integrated with mai-sonettes. Nothing has happened since then and no work has been done to renovate the market; indeed, for all purposes, apart from the car park stalls, Barnet Market no longer exists. Owing to the uncertainty, even while the market was still operating, both traders and customers drifted away, and it looks as though the traditional market will disappear altogether.
It would surely be reasonable for Barnet Council to assume responsibility for maintaining this long-established amenity and landmark by issuing a compulsory purchase order on the developers who at present own the market site. Otherwise it could become just a housing development. Although housing is important, it should be realised that its purpose would be to make a packet for the developer at the expense of residents for miles around.
The market is a feature which has kept the area on the map for centuries, and if the council would realise this, it would do its utmost to save it.
