A Barnet pub has been nominated for the annual National Pub and Bar of the Year award.

The Black Horse in Wood Street was one of six nominees for the East of England in this year’s competition.

It is one of 94 pubs and bars across England and Wales that have been nominated for the national award.

The best pub in the country will be officially named on June 28 at an awards ceremony in London, along with 15 regional winners.

The Black Horse’s nomination comes after it was unveiled as the Hertfordshire county winner.

Entries for the award began at the beginning of the year, and pubs have been judged on a number of metrics, including design, team welfare, food, drink and sustainability.

Tristan O’Hana, editor of Pub & Bar magazine, which runs the awards, said: “We were overwhelmed by the level and quality of entries this year.

“It just goes to show what magnificent work is going on across the UK hospitality sector.

“With outrageous energy costs, recruitment shortages and a punishing taxation system, these businesses are once again facing tough times.

“Now, more than ever, it’s vital that people support their local pubs and bars.”

The other nominees for the East of England were:

  • Essex – Galvin Green Man
  • Norfolk, Letheringsett – The Kings Head
  • Bedfordshire – The Manor Bar & Barbers
  • Cambridgeshire – The Three Hills
