Where Travelodge plans to open five new hotels in Barnet

Hotel chain Travelodge plans to expand its network, including new branches in Finchley North, Friern Barnet, Edgware, Golders Green and Mill Hill.

These would add to the four existing hotels in the area.

It has proposed a joint development partnership with Barnet Council for the projects that would “stimulate regeneration and facilitate further growth”.

Travelodge says this would represent a multi-million pound investment for third party investors.

The hotel firm wrote to the council outlining how the developments would boost the local economy and attract new visitors to the area.

Letters have been sent to 220 local authorities across Britain highlighting a total of 300 target locations the chain would like to expand to.

Travelodge says the expansion programme could represent an investment of around £3 billion for third party investors and create over 9,000 new jobs across the UK.

Local authorities will also have the choice of either retaining ownership of the hotel and receiving an annual rent into the council’s revenue budget or selling the hotel with Travelodge as its operator.

Steve Bennett, Travelodge chief property and development officer, said: “In the current climate, local authorities are under extreme pressure to invest in their economy and support regeneration projects.

“This is why we are today writing to Barnet Council.

“This expansion programme could represent a multi-million investment for third party investors and create 100 new jobs in the borough.

“In addition, our research shows that, on average, Travelodge customers will spend at least double their room rate with local businesses during their stay; this can equate to an annual, multi-million pound boost into the local economy.”
