A pair of serial fly-tippers have been sentenced to a combined total of three years after illegally dumping tonnes of waste in Finchley.

Patrick Anderson, 51, from Ireland and James Kelleher, 39, from Dagenham, were sentenced to 22 months and 14 months respectively at Inner Crown Court on Wednesday afternoon.

The pair were caught brazenly dumping waste at a site just off the North Circular in Finchley, four years ago, using lorries and levelling off the waste with a JCB digger.

They were also found to be responsible for dumping more than 14,600 tonnes of waste on at least 15 different locations around London and Essex.

Anderson fled to Ireland after their crimes came to light, but was brough back to the UK after a European arrest warrant was issued.

Councillor Brian Coleman, cabinet Member for community safety, said: "I am delighted that the courts have seen the seriousness of the offence and handed down prison sentences.

"This sends a clear message that if you illegally dump waste it will not be tolerated and, wherever you go, justice will eventually catch up with you."
