Artwork by marginalised members of the community has been given its own exhibition space by a North Finchley charity.
The newly built gallery is being opened by the arts charity Community Focus (CF) later this month (May). It will display work by Barnet residents and professional artists with physical disabilities, learning difficulties, or mental heath problems, as well as young people and older people.
Head of Programming at the charity, Caitriona Dunnett corr, said: "The CF gallery will be a great opportunity for emerging artists of all abilities to showcase their artwork in a supportive environment. We're looking forward to seeing a diverse array of work exhibited."
The gallery's first exhibition, See, Hear and Touch, will consist of artworks created in collaboration with deaf artist Abigail Hirsch corr, including moving sound sculptures, plaster casts and photograms - photographic prints produced in a darkroom by placing objects on light-sensitive paper.
Members of the public are invited to attend the exhibition opening at the gallery, in the entrance of the CF studios at artsdepot, Tally Ho Corner, on May 15 at 6.30pm.
Earlier this year, Arts Council England cut CF's annual grant of more than £50,000, instead giving it £27,500 of transitional funding, intended to give it time to find alternative funding. Since then the charity has secured funding from the Foundation for Sports and Arts, the London Borough of Barnet Exchange Grant and the Mercer's Company.
See, Hear and Touch is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 5.30pm and some evenings. Call 020 8369 5483 for more information, including evening opening times.
