A Whetstone church arts centre was the unlikely venue for a London wrestling competition on Saturday.

More than 200 people turned out to watch the LDN Wrestling's British heavyweight championship decider, hosted by the Arts Centre at All Saints' Church, in Oakleigh Road North, for the fourth time.

The event raised money to support community youth projects run by the church.

The Rev Adrian Benjamin, of All Saints', (pictured with wrestler Leroy Kincaid) is the promoter and legal licensee of the centre.

He said: "It was a wonderful evening, it was really lively and there was heckling and shouting, which is all part of it.

"All the funds will go to support our community youth projects with the police and the focus group and drop in cafe that we run during the week."

Mr Benjamin, who at one point appeared in the ring to tell one of the wrestlers off for swearing, said the championships also gave people an opportunity to meet him outside the Sunday service.

"Maybe it is because it is a context in which I am approachable, but people ask more questions at the wrestling than they do in church - after a wrestling match people tend to ask all sorts of religious questions," he added.

The main draw of the evening was the title show-down victory by six-foot wrestling champion Yorghos Christpolous, 20, from Harlow, over South London's Deptford-based 26-year-old Michael Mendoza.

Families attending the event also saw a bout involving a primary school teacher from Hertfordshire and, for the first time, a women's contest.

Sanjay Bagga, of LDN Wrestling, said: "It was a really good show and the atmosphere was electric.

"It was really good entertainment for the whole family. We always sell out here and we hope to come back in July."
