Targets to screen every young person in the borough for sexual diseases will be brought a step closer with the expansion of Barnet's sexual health service - even into patients' homes.

Barnet Primary Care Trust (PCT) is opening sexual health services in 11 more GP's surgeries to make testing and treatment for sexual illnesses more accessible for patients.

They are also encouraging young people to test themselves with a home-testing kit to detect Chlamidya, which has become the most widespread sexually transmitted illness (STI) among 16 to 24-year-olds in recent years.

The move comes after a pilot scheme in a small number of GP's surgeries proved successful, with the PCT targetting the ongoing problem of STI's over the past year.

Andrew Burnett, medical director of Barnet PCT, said: "These new enhanced sexual health services have been undertaken in response to the growing demand for the service and by feedback that has been received from service users.

"It is also the aim of Barnet PCT to increase patient choice and improve access to services. Good sexual health services are vital in improving public health."
