I was very pleased to see Tim Rusby raising concerns about the litter in our green spaces and I would be happy to join a local clean up group. I am concerned, however, that Barnet Council is not proactive on this issue. Other councils are using CCTV and issuing fines for those guilty of littering.
I have not seen any evidence of this in Barnet. In our parks (Montrose and the one opposite Colindale Tube station) there are a number of problems that could be addressed.
The groups that use Montrose for football on Sunday mornings leave a trail of white tape (which I believe they use on their boots) and plastic water bottles strewn across the park.
Surely the council knows who these groups are and could ask them to clean up after themselves?
If not, how about a Sunday morning walk around from council or community support officers?
In the Colindale park there are often groups of drinkers who leave plastic bags, bottles and cans on benches instead of walking a few paces to the bin. Community support officers could easily pay regular visits to this area. This area is also covered by CCTV.
The bins in this park are open topped and so the birds are able to rummage for scraps. Needless to say they don't return the bits they don't want to the bins.
Parks officers told me the council cannot afford to replace these bins.
If volunteers are needed to clean up our green areas then more work on prevention is needed from the council.
