Sewage and water leaks are blighting homes on a Barnet estate and residents say "enough is enough".

Flats in Millbridge, Dollis Valley, are constantly damp and deluged by water when it rains, according to residents.

Last week, they complained of dirty water flooding their homes, ruining furnishings and swamping floors and ceilings.

Rosemary Cornes, 48, whose three-bedroom, ground-floor maisonette was one of four homes worst affected, said the situation had become unbearable. She said: "I have had sewage in my home and through the walls, it constantly stinks, and there is a musty smell throughout the house," said Mrs Cornes, who has lived in the property for 29 years.

"We get rain pouring into the main bedroom, there are black and brown patches on the ceiling, and every time we replace the carpets they just get wet again.

"We have got used to living here, but since our sons left home in October, we thought enough is enough' and we need to move out."

She claims Barnet Homes, which is responsible for the property, and its service provider Connaught, are failing occupants. And she says her arthritis is aggravated by the conditions.

"Over the past 29 years, I always seem to have been fobbed off, and I don't want to put up with it anymore."

Ryan Bolton, Connaught operations manager, said workers were able to clear water from the property last Monday. He added: "Last week we responded immediately to flooding concerns, working into the evening clearing blocked gullys of litter to alleviate conditions, and we have put recommendations forward towards long-term measures.

"We urge tenants who have any queries or concerns to contact their customer liaison adviser or their local area housing office."

"We sympathise with our customers at Millbridge and will continue to support them in achieving warm and modernised homes."

A Barnet Homes spokeswoman said: "Any damp problems are dealt with on an individual basis. The majority of these cases are caused by condensation or accidental flooding including overflowing baths."

She assured residents who may want to move out that options are available to them. She said transfer forms are available and tenants can call the freephone number 0800 3895225 to request one to be posted to them.
