A former mayor of Hertsmere has died at the age of 91.

Eddie Roach served as mayor of the borough in 2003/04 and he was an elected councillor in Potters Bar.

Hertsmere Borough Council posted on March 21: "We’re saddened by the news that former Mayor of Hertsmere, Honorary Alderman Eddie Roach died a few days ago.

"He served as Mayor in the 2003 to 2004 municipal year as well as two spells as Deputy Mayor. He also spent many years as a borough councillor for Potters Bar.

"Our thoughts are with his family."

Mr Roach became a borough councillor in 1994, when he ran as an independent candidate, campaigning to save Potters Bar Hospital. He later joined the Conservative Group, which took control of the council in 1999, and continued serving in Potters Bar Parkfield until 2010.

He also served as a county councillor in Hertfordshire.

The county council paid its own tribute to Mr Roach saying: "It is with great sadness that we pass on news about the death of former county councillor Eddie Roach at the age of 91.

"Edwin Thomas Roach was a county councillor for eight years, serving as the member for Potters Bar East from 2005 to 2013, including acting as vice-chairman of the council from 2009-2011.

"As a county councillor he served on several committees including community safety, health scrutiny, overview and scrutiny, and development control.

"After retiring from Council he was elected as an Honorary Alderman in May 2013."

Before entering politics, Mr Roach served in the RAF, then as a Metropolitan Police officer, where he worked at Borehamwood Police Station and at New Scotland Yard's anti-corruption team.

He also held the position as a director of the Hertfordshire Building Preservation Trust Ltd and Dame Alice Owen's School in Potters Bar.
