An Islamic cultural centre looks set to expand following public backing from more than a thousand people.
The Islamic Association of North London (IANL) wants to build a four-storey extension at the front of its existing base on High Road, Finchley, and provide extra car and cycle parking.
It claimed expanding the cultural centre would help improve the services it provides for youngsters.
Barnet Council received 1,132 letters of support for the plans and 83 letters of objection.
Council officers said the expansion would deliver “an improved facility at a site which provides social interaction for a large number of the borough’s residents” and have recommended the plans be approved.
Some of the concerns expressed by residents include an increase in traffic, a lack of parking provision and additional noise pollution.
But others claimed the scheme would lead to less traffic and noise outside the mosque, while contributing to the regeneration of North Finchley.
Council officers argued the design of the building would be acceptable as a “one off” in the area.
The expansion would allow the centre to hold one prayer meeting instead of two, which the IANL said would not lead to an overall increase in the number of people attending the centre.
It would also provide a parent and toddler recreation area, a bookshop, formalised teaching and seminar areas, and a small office.
The council has attached several conditions to the proposals aimed at minimising the impact on the area, including a travel plan.
A maximum of 950 people would be allowed on site in connection with the mosque at any one time.
The applicant would also have to carry out a survey to ensure the surrounding roads were not damaged by construction vehicles.
The plans will be considered at a meeting of Finchley and Golders Green area planning committee at 6pm on Tuesday (February 12) at Hendon Town Hall.
