Did you know that there are about 700,000 people in the UK who are on the autism spectrum? Together with their families, this mean autism is a part of daily life for 2.8 million people.
There are autistic people in schools who are seen every day. It has been known that indifference and hostility towards autistic people and their families leads to the following issues:
• Social isolation
• Mental illness
• Unhappy lives
However, it is also known that helping young people – and teachers – to understand autism as they grow up will equip them to accept and empathise with autistic people.
Autism Awareness Week will commence on Monday 27th March and proceed until Sunday 2nd April.
How will Autism Awareness Week be celebrated in schools?
School’s Autism Awareness Week has invited teachers and pupils to:
• Learn about autism and in fun, imaginative lessons, activities and assemblies that are level-specific
• Plan and take part in amazing fundraising activities
• Help spread the word about why it’s so important to understand and accept autism.
