Cinema fanatics could be in with a chance to help run a cinema which is a favourite among famous faces like Benedict Cumberbatch, Judi Dench and Michael Palin.

The Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley, built in 1910, was saved from demolition in 1985 and has since been run as a community cinema by the Phoenix Cinema Trust.

Now the trust is looking for a new trustee to help manage the cinema’s finances, develop future business strategies and help with promotion.

Since its construction, the Phoenix has been a popular mainstay in Finchley – showing the biggest blockbusters alongside smaller indie features and special screenings.

It is one of the last purpose-built cinemas still operating in the UK and was listed by English Heritage in 2000 for its historical and architectural significance.

Chairman of the trust James Kessler said: “This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in one of original pioneers of cinema in London.

“The Phoenix is an integral part of the community fabric here in North London providing opportunities to see classic films, experience theatre and engage with art all under one roof.

“The new trustees will play a vital role in ensuring this independent cinema continues to add value over a century after it was built.

“We welcome applicants from all walks of life, as running a community cinema requires a huge range of skills.

“The critical requirements are a passion for cinema and the time and enthusiasm to make sure the Phoenix remains the jewel of East Finchley.”

Ideal candidates would have some experience in fundraising, marketing, digital media or HR.
