A Barnet detective took bribes to pass on confidential information about high-level offenders in Barnet to two private detectives, a court heard this week.

Detective Sergeant Paul Dennis, 47, provided sensitive details to two former Metropolitan Police colleagues on more than a dozen occasions, it is alleged.

Dennis was based at Colindale police station and worked for Scotland Yard's Police Protection Unit. His work involved monitoring paedophiles, sex offenders and violent criminals in Barnet.

Southwark Crown Court heard on Tuesday that the information which Dennis passed on could easily have fallen into the hands of criminals and put police operations at risk.

In return, Paul Kenny, 48, and Owen Griffin, 53, gave Dennis generous backhanders, it is claimed. The three previously served together at Hillingdon police station, in west London.

Dennis was said to have passed on the information between April and September, 2005. Dennis, who lives in Devon, denies 13 counts of misconduct in public office.

Kenny, of The Crossway, Hillingdon, denies seven counts of aiding and abetting Dennis. Griffin, of Penton Road, Staines, denies six similar counts. The trial continues.
