When Margaret Konow Lund met John Newman while on holiday in Mallorca in the Fifties, she could never have imagined that some 48 years later Between the Lines would be attempting to reunite them.
Only occasionally does this column put itself forward as an alternative to Friends Reunited, but when 71-year-old Margaret emailed from her senior citizens' club in Norway, our heartstrings were tugged sufficiently for us to take action.
Now married with four children, Margaret, who taught herself English, contacted us in the hope of finding Mr Newman, or members of his family, having lost touch after a visit to Edgware in 1959. During her holiday in the Balearics she met Mr Newman and his friend, possibly called Maitland, and began chatting about their shared interests, including the theatre.
In her email, Margaret wrote: "I live outside Oslo, in a place called Tranby. John was a wonderful boy and 25 years old. At that time I worked in theatres in Oslo, and he worked at the London Palladium. He invited me over to stay with his family in Edgware. I have never been so welcomed in all my life. These people were so nice and I had a wonderful visit.
"As time goes by I was wondering if he is still alive. He also had a sister in Edgware, her husband's name was Stephen."
