MPs are calling for action over a planned neo-Nazi rally in Golders Green.

An early day motion has been lodged in Parliament over the demonstration on July 4, when far-right groups including the New Dawn Party say they will hold a demonstration against "Jewish privilege".

Led by Tulip Siddiq, MP for the neighbouring Hampstead and Kilburn seat, it praises the “public activism” in opposition to the rally, including the change.org petition which has gathered more than 11,000 signatures.

The motion commends the Golders Green Together campaign’s work to “promote solidarity and celebrate diversity”, and calls on the Home Secretary to consider further action to “isolate the politics of hate and division" on our streets.

The motion highlights the fact the rally is due to take place on the Sabbath, in an area which is 40 per cent Jewish.

Signed by five MPs, it also calls for “every measure” to be taken to protect the “vibrant" community from provocation and abuse.

The rally has drawn widespread condemnation. Prime Minister David Cameron said protesters should face the “full force of the law” if they commit any criminal offences when it was raised in Prime Minister’s Questions by Finchley and Golders Green MP Mike Freer two weeks ago.

Leader of Barnet council Councillor Richard Cornelius said: “One of Barnet’s greatest strengths is the diverse community who call the borough home, and I know that residents are concerned by the proposed demonstration taking place at Golders Green on July 4.

“Resident safety is a key priority for the council and we continue to work hard to support Scotland Yard who are leading on the policing of the demonstration.

“The council has been reassured by the police that they are doing all that is in their power to manage the demonstration and will keep the community informed of the police response.

“Whilst we acknowledge the right to free speech, we urge all individuals and groups planning to attend the demonstration to respect the rights of our local community to go about their daily business peacefully.

“Anyone displaying anti-Semitic, racist or threatening behaviour is not welcome in Barnet and will face the full force of the law.”
