A recently retired minister has paid tribute to his “caring” congregation as he prepares to leave Barnet.
The Reverend Richard Wells, 71, has stepped down after six years at Christ Church at Whetstone, in Oakleigh Park North.
He will move to Halstead, Essex with his wife Liz, 69, next month, where he plans to spend his retirement gardening and country walking.
The Rev Wells said: “It was sad to say bye. They are caring people, with a desire to bless others less fortunate around the world.”
He said he was proud the congregation had grown during his time, with the number of children and young people having quadrupled.
A special service was held in the church last weekend, where members presented the couple with gifts, including a lawnmower, to ease their retirement.
The Rev Wells, who has two children, James and Sarah, and four grandchildren, added: “I will miss living in London, but it will be a nice change.”
Jeremy Alford, 56, a member of the church, said: “Richard has been a superb pastor to his congregation over the past six years. He has made it a very loving and inclusive place where all are welcome.”
Mr Alford, who runs a sheltered housing scheme in High Barnet, added: “He has welcomed people from all over the world and from all different backgrounds into the church. That will be my enduring memory.”
