Barnet has become one of only four authorities in the country to give council tenants the opportunity to part-buy their home.
The Social Homebuy scheme allows people living in council-owned properties the opportunity to buy shares of between 25 per cent and 75 per cent in their home, while continuing to pay rent on the remaining percentage.
A survey carried out by Barnet Council in November last year showed 99 per cent of people living in council properties, and 95 per cent of people renting private accommodation, could not afford to buy a property.
Councillor Lynne Hillan, cabinet member for community services, said: "As property prices have increased, council tenants have found it increasingly difficult to exercise the right to buy their property, but surveys continue to show that most people want to own their own home.
"The council is committed to doing what it can to extend home ownership and this scheme provides an exciting, more affordable opportunity for tenants who want to get onto the property ladder."
Applicants must have been secure tenants for at least two years and have a good rent record. Not all properties are eligible, with those living in regeneration estates and redevelopment areas missing out.
To take part in Social Homebuy, tenants should contact Jenny Barman at Barnet Homes, which is running the scheme on behalf of the council, on 020 8359 4387.
