A police station paid tribute to an officer who died saving a friend during a diving trip by naming a new children’s area after him.
The Gilbert Suite, named in memory of Detective Sergeant John Gilbert, will provide space for children and families waiting to be interviewed at Edgware Police Station.
Det Sgt Gilbert, 58, a respected child abuse investigator based in Edgware, died in an accident while diving with the Metropolitan Police Sub Aqua Club in the English Channel, off Littlehampton in August 2009.
He was posthumously commended for saving an inexperienced diver who had fallen into difficulties.
The room is full of toys and games to make children feel more comfortable. It was opened this week by The Bright Horizons Foundation for Children, which helps families in crisis.

Bright Horizons Foundation for Children manager Tracy Wilkes-Green said: “We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service by supporting their amazing work assisting children when they are at their most vulnerable.
“We hope the space is a fitting tribute to Detective Sergeant John Gilbert.”
Detective Inspector Liam Adams, based at the station, said he was proud to honour Detective Sergeant John Gilbert in such a special way.
