So much for David Cameron making the Conservatives a nicer party. The letter from former Tory councillor Anthony Spencer (Lib Dem Party harlot of politics', April 5) was an extremely nasty diatribe, riddled with homophobic undertones and utterly unworthy of publication.

For the sake of fairness, a few points need to be corrected. Firstly the term the harlot of British politics' was first used by the Conservatives in relationship to the Liberal Party when Winston Churchill crossed the floor of the House of Commons to join the Liberals (he later rejoined the Tories).

With regards to rent boy scandals and drunks, any serious politician should know that this is not the exclusive domain of the Liberals. There is a saying that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Why not look at the behaviour of his own party? His own councillor for borough safety was banned from driving for speeding. The head of the Hendon planning committee was hauled before the same committee for flouting planning rules.

When he chose to dig up a 30-year-old scandal, he ignored the 30-year-old racist diatribe from Brian Gordon, exposed in the Times.

My local Lib Dem councillors, Jeremy Davies and Wayne Casey, are excellent examples of good politicians (I say that as a Labour Party member so I have no axe to grind). If Anthony Spencer acted a bit more like them, maybe he wouldn't now be an ex-councillor.
