Beacons were lit to mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe day.
Barnet Scouts held a celebration at the Frith Grange campsite in Mill Hill on Friday, lighting one of a chain of 200 beacons across the country.
Normandy veteran Fred Harris, 92, opened the event, which was attended by more than 600 people.
Bugler Kevin Kyle, of Mill Hill School Combined Cadet Force, played The Last Post.
The beacon was lit by the Mayor of Barnet Councillor Hugh Rayner, together with Barnet’s newest Queen’s Scout Kirsty Austin, at 9.32pm, two minutes after the Queen lit the first in the chain outside Windsor Castle.
The Queen’s Representative, Deputy Lieutenant Martin Russell, who is also chairman of Barnet Borough Scouts, said: “It was an excellent event, honouring the veterans and those whose sacrifice gave us the future that the young people represent."
The mayor reminded the crowd of the enormous cost of the war, with more than 60 million lives lost, and paid tribute to the efforts of the Scouts in building the beacon.
