In response to Melvin Haskins’ letter on equality (‘On a par with most developed countries’, Your Views, April 9), our assertion that the UK is one of the most unequal societies in the developed world is based on data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
Out of the 28 developed countries listed on their ‘Income Inequality’ data page, the UK is ranked fifth for income inequality in 2011, behind only Chile, Turkey, the United States and Israel. To be fair, there are quite a few countries only just below us, but we could still do better. [https://data.oecd.org/inequality/income-inequality.htm]
