The Times Series petition to create 30 minutes of free parking across high streets and car parks in Barnet has reached more than 1,000 signatures in less than a week.
Online, more than 700 people have added their name in support of our 30 Minutes Free campaign with at least 300 others signing paper copies in shops and cafes.
We now hope to reach 1,500 by this time next week - but we need your help.
We are calling on Barnet Borough Council to create free parking to help shoppers run the quick errands they have been deterred from by parking restrictions.
Many say they are put off from using the “complicated” pay-by-phone system or spending roughly £1 for a small trip to the shops.
Instead, they travel to nearby Brent Cross, where parking is free.
Shelly Davidson, who works at D&M Jewellers, in Temple Fortune, said: “I think it’s a fantastic idea. Our business is based a lot on repairs.
“If people had half an hour just to pop in it would help turnover dramatically.
“Nobody has refused to sign it. People aren’t too hopeful they are going to get it, but it’s greatly needed.”
