A philanthropist who has given thousands to help good causes has been recognised for his achievements.

John Dorington Apthorp, who was granted freedom of the borough of Barnet in 2008, was made a CBE by the Queen in the New Year's Honours List.

The 78-year-old, who was a councillor in the Edgware ward from 1968 to 1974, recieved the honour in recognition of the grants he has given to charities.

In 1982, Mr Apthorp set up the Milly Apthorp Charitable Trust with his mother Milly.

Since then it has handed out more than £10 million to assist arts organisations, projects and individuals in the voluntary sector.

Mr Apthorp, who lives in Newlands Road, Radlett, said: “It is a great honour to be recognised in this way. I have been very successful in the City and have used the funds to give something back to the community.

“I have have concentrated on helping small charities in the local area. I have given lump sums to struggling charities and grants to help new organisations of the ground.”

Mr Apthorp was previously awarded an OBE for his charity work.

He added: “It is important that businessmen like myself and other successful people give money to help those less fortunate through these tough times.”
