An Edgware primary school is setting a Mitzvah Day example by encouraging its pupils to interact with elderly people in the community.
Beit Shvidler pupils regularly visit the nearby Symar Lodge care home in Hale Lane to chat with residents.
Jewish charity Mitzvah Day and the Times Series are promoting the Sunshine for Seniors challenge, encouraging more people to engage with the older generation.
Headteacher at Beit Shvidler, Sara Keen, explained the difference her students’ visits make to the residents at Symar Lodge.
She said: “We all benefit from this form of interaction. The children have enjoyed interacting with elderly residents and have a natural curiosity about people who they don't normally socialise with.
“Some children are more comfortable around older people than others and there can be an initial hesitancy in getting involved but in the end they all do.”
The school has built a good relationship with the care home and will be visiting on Mitzvah Day, on November 17, to have a musical afternoon.
Beit Shvidler pupil Joshy Cadranel, nine, said: “I feel happy when I visit with older people and really enjoy speaking to them. I like putting a smile on their faces and I think they enjoy seeing us.”
