People have been left horrified after two men were stabbed during a suspected brawl in a usually “peaceful” street.
Two men in their thirties suffered knife wounds to the chest during the alleged fight at the junction of East Crescent and Beaconsfield Road, Brunswick Park, just after 11pm on Saturday night.
One of the men is now fighting for his life in hospital but the other man’s injuries have been described as non-critical.
Pinakin Barot, of East Crescent, arrived at home 15 minutes before the drama unfolded just yards from his doorstep.
He said: “It is crazy. This is a usually very peaceful street and in the six years we have been here, there have been no problems.
“Of course it is scary to know this has happened where you live.
“My wife woke up in the morning for a job interview and she was nearly late for it because you couldn’t get in or out of the road.”
Detectives cordoned off Beaconsfield Road between the junctions with Oakleigh Road North and East Crescent until late Sunday afternoon.
Officers were initially called to reports of a disturbance in Oakleigh Road North at 11.10pm, but the crowd had dispersed by the time they arrived.
One woman said: “There were people everywhere and they were being very loud, I could hear shouting. It was very dramatic.
“They left and the next minute, there were policemen zooming up the street but that’s all I saw. It was quite frightening actually.
“I had no idea what happened but guessed someone had been badly injured. The police actually seemed to do a great job in dealing with it.”
Paramedics were called at 11.15pm and sent three ambulance crews, the duty officer and the air ambulance crew in a car.
Police have since arrested one man, who remains in police custody.
A block of flats in Park Wood, a residential street off Beaconsfield Road, was also being treated as part of the crime scene.
A mother, who lives in Beaconsfield Road, said: “It’s frightening when you hear about things like this, but in this day and age, it doesn’t surprise me any more.
“I am still shocked though – it’s a bit unsettling when you hear about something that’s happened near you.”
