A Labour lobbyist who has close ties to the Jewish community in north London has been appointed to the House of Lords.
Jonathan Mendelsohn, a chairman at the Finchley United Synagogue, was announced today as a working peer for the Labour Party.
The 56-year-old, who lives in Finchley, sits on the board of directors of New Labour pressure group Progress and is a former lobbyist for gambling company PartyGaming.
Mr Mendelsohn is a trustee of the Holocaust Educational Trust and in 2007 worked as the chief fundraiser for the Labour Party leading up to the general election.
He was also a co-founder of political lobbying firm LLM, which was credited with saving Tesco in the region of £40million when it persuaded MPs to abandon plans for a supermarket car park tax.
