Barnet's Labour group has welcomed the High Court’s ruling on the council’s “unfair” controlled parking zones.

The opposition accused Barnet Borough Council of using the CPZ charges as a “cash cow” and praised the campaigners such as David Attfield who had fought to challenge the policy.

Barnet Labour shadow spokesperson for parking Cllr Alan Schneiderman said the residents in the CPZ areas had faced the equivalent of a seven percent increase in council tax.

He added: “Oposition councillors have campaigned alongside residents for years to get these charges reversed but they just wouldn't listen.

"Yet again their arrogance and incompetence has been laid bare.”

This ruling is the latest in a series of what the Labour group called a “shocking litany” of judicial review judgments against the council, concerning its failure to consult residents.

Labour group leader Cllr Alison Moore added: “Yet again this arrogant Tory administration dismissed the views of local residents and it has come back to bite them.

“Labour opposition councillors gave them repeated opportunities to draw back from these unfair and ill-judged hikes in parking charges but the Tories ploughed on regardless.

“This judgement is a damning indictment of the Barnet Tories' incompetence.”
